I am considering Un-schooling
Mar 13 2009, 2:39 AM EDT
I have a child who learns differently. She is a non-conformist and does not excel in the constrictive boundaries of the conventional school schedule. I am looking into unschooling her. Unschooling is (I think) giving the reins over to the student and letting the student steer. To follow their interests and just be a guide. It is so not what I am used to, so out of my comfort zone, that I am having constant doubts. I know this will be harder for me than her. Any thoughts?

Hi! I am so glad you were brave enough to ask this. I have homeschooled my children for many years using the mentoring system which essentially focuses on your childrens interests and strengths. It has been exciting and successful. It's called the Thomas Jefferson method and somewhere I have a book about it. Interests change and so kids tend to just learn to love learning about so many things. If you have any questions I'd love to discuss it with you. You can also go online to George Wythe or google Thomas Jefferson homeschooling methods. My girls are mostly grown now and have grown to love debate, challenging the norm, learning and my oldest is involved in youth law.

Oh Charly, Thank you for sharing that. I always wondered what you used with the girls. I am going to look that up. And if you ever find that book, I would love to borrow it for a bit. Brave? Probably not; I dont feel too brave about this. Hopefully with some time, I will succeed in quieting the tremors. BUt for now Im stepping out in faith. Yikes!! Terri 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
